Does News Matter to Anyone Anymore?

Former Baltimore Sun reporter, David Simon, better known as the executive producer of HBO’s The Wire, wrote a column in the Washington Post yesterday that is pretty much a continuation of the series’ narrative in its fifth and final season.

Simon is salty, cynical and irreverent. If you care about the future of the American free press, read it.

One of his mighty excerpts:

“Isn’t the news itself still valuable to anyone? In any format, through any medium — isn’t an understanding of the events of the day still a salable commodity? Or were we kidding ourselves? Was a newspaper a viable entity only so long as it had classifieds, comics and the latest sports scores?”
