An Oct. 18 story in The Chicago Tribune examines the fact that longtime red state Indiana is a surprise toss-up in the presidential election. Unfortunately for New Albany, the story quotes the following resident:
For others, like David Ward, who runs an antique shop with his wife in New Albany, the issue is race. Ward, a registered Democrat, said he will vote for McCain “mainly because he’s not black.”
Really? Way to go, buddy.
In related news, The Chicago Tribune endorsed Barack Obama last week. It’s the first time the conservative newspaper has ever endorsed a Democrat for president.

I am personally to the point where these comments no longer offend or surprise me..and I’m black! When are people going to do the work to educate themselves and realize we are all made the same, darker people only have more pigment!
I’ve seen this earlier, on a message board, and still nobody seems to know what antique shop this is — or I guess maybe people just don’t want to divulge it. Hey LEO folks, how about you TELL US what antique shop in New Albany this guy owns, so not only can we, the public, not shop there, but maybe we can even have a protest or two? Please?
Hi Joel (and others). Here’s that info about Mr. Ward, the dude who won’t vote for Obama because he’s black.
David Ward owns Main Street Antiques and Treasures, 202 E. Main St., New Albany, IN, 47150. I got that from Randy Smith, another local businessman and Obama supporter, writing here: http://open.salon.com/content.php?cid=31034.
There’s also this story from the NA News & Tribune, an interview with Ward’s wife, a co-owner of the store. I have no idea what her politics are.
Whoops — here’s the link I was referring to in that last graf: http://www.newsandtribune.com/archivesearch/local_story_279015601.html
Thanks!
From the NA Tribune link:
“Q: What is in your CD player either at home or in your car right now?
Ward: “Jimmy Buffet or Lynyrd Skynyrd.”
That’s reason enough to protest the store
The Chicago Tribune had to go 300 miles south to find someone who would admit to not wanting to vote Obama because of his father’s race. Clearly, the whole state of Indiana is filled with nothing but racists…
