Still the King

Billed as the most important Republican in Congress during his introduction by Kentucky State Sen. David Williams, R-Burksville, Sen. Mitch McConnell survived a close race against Democratic challenger Bruce Lunsford. Despite the Democratic tidal wave nationally, Mitch stands, setting him up as undoubtedly the most important Republican in America for the post-Bush years.

Not surprisingly, McConnell, who is the Senatre Minority Leader, gave a gracious victory speech. Though a nasty campaign ensued between McConnell and his Democratic opponent, Bruce Lunsford, the entrenched GOP leader is often amiable to his opponents. The party faithful awaiting his arrival at the Galt House were not and poured their enthusiam over him as they teased Lunsford.

“We love you Mitch!” and “We beat him like a drum” rang out.

“Most kids grow up wanting to be baseball players,” McConnell said. “I wanted to be a U.S. Senator.”

The man who will be the longest serving Senator in Kentucky history is confident and he should be. Lunsford had the best opportunity to unseat the 24-year incumbent. In the end, ‘Ditch Mitch’ was not enough to give Lunsford the nod. Get used to it Kentucky.

“Winston Churchill once said the most exhilarating thing is to be shot at — and missed,” McConnell said.
