As we all sit braced for the impending sweep of layoffs this week at The Courier-Journal, a little intel is seeping out. According to a source inside, those who accepted the voluntary buyout offer — same as the layoff package, a week’s pay for every year worked — are being let go today. We’re also hearing that some designers have been laid off. However, a source tells us the bulk of the layoffs will be announced tomorrow, and that cuts to the Metro and Neighborhoods desks won’t happen. Another source relays that “critics” will be laid off.
I ate lunch today, as I often do, at City Cafe on Broadway, next door to the C-J building. I counted eight C-J employees in there today, and every damn one had a look of total despair. For all the competition and ribbing between LEO and the C-J (and its ancillaries), I think it’s safe to say we feel for ya. Damn.
UPDATE: Rick Redding at Ville Voice is reporting the first names in the C-J layoffs. Check it out.
