Lunchbox: A random array of news

The end is near: Despite the efforts of Old Louisville residents to save the historic firehouse at Sixth and York streets, it appears the station will close this weekend as scheduled. Last month, Mayor Jerry Abramson announced plans to close the station and reassign its firefighters to save money during the city’s budget crisis. Residents met with the mayor yesterday in a last-ditch effort to change his mind, but they are not hopeful he will reconsider.

Yikes!: The charter plane carrying the Cards basketball team had to make an emergency landing yesterday due to what appeared to be a small fire in one of the engines. The plane landed safely and the team boarded another flight headed for Tampa, where they will play South Florida tonight.

Cannot compute: The United States is facing a $1.2 trillion budget deficit in 2009. President-elect Barack Obama blames President Bush forĀ ”the worst economic crisis that we’ve seen since the Great Depression.”

But they’re so cute!: British cuisine has never garnered much respect (although I’m a fan of meat and potatoes and fish and chips). But now it seems Brits are regularly chowing down on a menu item I simply cannot endorse: squirrels.

Best movies ever?: I’m a sucker for top-10 lists, so here’s one from The New York Times touting the 10 best American movies of all time. I have only seen three of them, including “Groundhog Day,” which although I liked, seems like an odd choice for the list.
