Dispatches from Gaza

For the past eight days, Louisville activist Sharon Wallace has braved the sound of bombs, traveling back and forth to the Gaza border from Cairo, Egypt. The Louisville woman traveled to the war-torn region last week, along with several fellow activists, to provide medical aid to those injured by Israeli military attacks. The latest reports say the death toll is nearing 1,100.

“It’s extremely frightening,” Wallace said during a phone interview from Cairo. “I don’t deny that because there is no safe place.”

Wallace, a member of the Louisville Committee for Peace in the Middle East, says her group is still being barred from crossing into Gaza at the Egyptian border. International reports says the current medical crisis in Gaza is approaching a “humanitarian catastrophe” if a cease-fire isn’t reached soon.

“To get in is very difficult because Israel doesn”t want people in, especially journalists and human-rights activists because we report on what’s really going on,” Wallace said.

On Monday, Wallace expects her group to gain access into Gaza and finally deliver an ambulance and medical supplies.

Cairo is likely 150-200 miles away from the Gaza Strip, not exactly nearby. Unless the Israelis are using some big-ass munitions, or there’s another Cairo in Egypt aside from the famous, most populous I’m thinking of…
