So Fox News had this fancy “exclusive” interview with 18-year-old new mom Bristol Palin, in which the unwed teenaged mother (!) got a bit of the devil in ‘er and said what mommy Sarah P. just can’t: Teens have sex. It happens. In real life. Shocker.
The conflict, of course, is that Momma Bear has been a proponent of abstinence-only education, which studies show does not work. No matter, MB still seems to believe teens aren’t really having sex, or at least that adults can somehow convince them to stop. Worked well enough for her.
In any case, check out the interview and Salon’s analysis here. A snippet:
But more than just sound bites, Van Susteren’s interview with Bristol (and her “surprise-guest” mom) was a vivid reminder of how, sadly, this unremarkable high schooler got dragged into the spotlight by a Republican ticket anxious to paper over its party’s family-values inconsistencies with the addition of a just-folks clan led by an Alaskan governor determined to use her family as an illustration of her policies. It was also an embodiment of all that was frustrating and tone-deaf about those policies, and about the governor’s candidacy for the vice-presidency.

Can’t tell you how many times I had unprotected sex at 16, Bristol. Today, I still think about those moments. Sex at 16 was incredible for me. On, my God.
Abstinence, what a joke! I agree. Rock on with your opinion girl. But, gotta tell ya. I’m no Fox fanatic. Isn’t it interesting an Australian has so much influence on American opinion? Why? My view — he doesn’t care, really, and is only interested in profits for his own pocket. Fox perspective is not American perspective. All employees at Fox are only interested in their own pay check. I’m sure they love America, but all of them love their checkbook more.
When I was your age, we thought ourselves invincible, yet worried every month about you know what. It never happened. Once we started playing around like that, there was no “abstinence”, we thought we were bulletproof. Luckily, she and I never got prego, but, as you can relate, there were many months where we worried. Argg!
How different life would have been, if she’d, err we’d gotten pregnant. Thank you for voicing out what’s with you now. Hug you new kid. Hugs are important.
