Rail to Nowhere?

A Google search of the terms “Louisville”, “light”, and “rail”, yields this embarrassingly spartan website as the first hit — barren template, warts and all. If this is indicative as to how seriously the concept is being taken in this city, then it remains to be seen how the stimulus cash will be thrown around (especially in light of Metro housing’s recent snafu).

Good thing President Obama told Abramson & Co. he has an extra set of eyes in the back of his head

Light Rail is not part of the stimulus. There are two major obstacles. Its definitely far from “shovel ready”, and we sadly have no funding stream in place to maintain even if we could afford to build it.

TARC is getting ~$17m in stimulus. The T2 Light Rail line would cost on the order of 50 times that!

What TARC is getting is a big new infusion of 20 badly needed hybrid buses, renovation to its maintainence facility, a new roof for their bus storage facility (with maybe a neat ability built in), 6 TARC-3 paratransit buses, maybe some surveillance cameras for existing buses, and here I should probably stop talking.

TARC gets a lot of items crossed off its too-do list from the stimulus, and to be honest they did a great job of getting their funding applications in ship-shape for the stimulus, so much so that they’re probably going to capture funds from other agencies that can’t spend the cash by the deadline.
