Hey sucker: Want to know how much Uncle Sam is stealing from your debt-laden pockets right this very minute? Venture to nationalpriorities.org, whereupon you’ll discover the gross and obvious spending priorities of that last guy we had in the White House (I totally forgot about him, that one…) vs. our new, hopey one.
Regarding our beloved Commonwealth, you may be interested to know that, courtesy of Your Friendly Neighborhood Socialist, more poor kids will get treatment under the Child Health Insurance Program ($126 million, up from $69.3 million), more poor people will receive weatherization benefits ($43.1 million, up from Bush’s paltry $4.6 million, which isn’t enough to deal with the kind of storms we’ve been getting lately), and generally pretty much everything else that you can spend money on.
Perhaps most interestingly, the site allows you to compare the efficiency of Obama’s spending with that of his chromosomally-challenged predecessor. For example, national education spending is, on average, down for 2010. So did Obama suddenly about-face and pull a classic ’starve-the-beast’ move? No! The spending was … wait for it … re-prioritized; instead of giving gobs of money to usurious lending companies, those subsidies will instead come in the form of Direct Loans, which go … wait for it. … directly to students.
Most depressingly: This damn thing, which allows you to calculate the horrific spending discrepancies between, say, the $1 billion tax cuts given to the wealthiest 10% vs. the 380,000 poor, barefoot Kentucky children who could’ve recieved a free year of health care. Damn you, transparency!
