Atheists “Believe” in Obama (For Now)
Wahhhh… there is no god… life is meaningless… wahhh… But hark! Politico is paying attention to us, we the persecuted non-believers!
Nathan Bupp, director of communications for the Center for Inquiry, says that many nonbelievers view Obama’s invocations of faith as nothing more than a “symbolic gesture” used to aid his quest for social justice.
“There is a sense where secularists are politically savvy enough to do this,” says Bupp. “They realize [Obama] is not doing what he’s doing for Pat Robertson-type reasons.”
Yet:
… Ed Buckner, president of the American Atheists, wonders whether advocates and activists may witness a one-step-forward, two-steps-backward phenomenon with Obama.
While grateful for the new president’s cap-tipping, Buckner says, “The fact that our best shot of making things better still goes around saying God stuff all the time in some ways maybe makes it worse.”
What? You really expected a black man who was accused of being a Muslim terrorist while running a national presidential campaign to start rolling his cigarettes with Bible paper once he convinced enough people he believed that Jesus is Magic? This is ‘Merica, folks!
Barry’s got re-election to think about, and there’s nothing Americans hate more than a Muslim terrorist than a filthy, godless know-it-all. (Keep in mind the War on Terror is but a blip on our xenophobic radar; our hatred of commie atheists has been lurking around for decades…) So go back to listening to Nine Inch Nails and writing shitty existentialist poetry in the cold comfort that Jesus loves you anyway — even if Your President most likely does not.
