Abramson moving on up: Mayor Jerry Abramson announced this morning, in a joint presser with Gov. Steve Beshear, that he will not seek a third and final term as Metro mayor in 2010, instead joining Beshear’s re-election ticket as lieutenant governor in the 2011 race (which evidently has just begun). Read the C-J’s exhaustive coverage here. And for some more, read what the TV stations are doing here, here, here and here. The consensus of the coverage is pretty much that Beshear wants Abramson for his experience as “CEO” of a major city, as well as the skills the mayor brings as chief salesman — something Beshear will clearly need if he intends to continue chasing his white whales: slots at racetracks, vice tax increases, and so forth. LEO’s coverage of what we’re politely calling The Abramson Vacuum will hit Wednesday.
Gilpin remembered: It’s crazy to think it’s almost been a year since Max Gilpin, a PRP student and football player, died after suffering heat stroke during a blazing-hot summer practice. While the city has been gripped with coverage of the trials and tribulations of his former coach, it’s nice to see this story focusing on the kid himself, who would’ve just turned 16.
The Decider?: With as many as five different health care overhaul proposals floating around the halls of Congress, big media are reporting that President Obama is stepping up his push for reform, which includes a public option, adding that whether the country goes in the sensible direction of health care for all is up to him.
