8664 Lays Statistical Smackdown

Despite what you may have read in our fair berg’s “major newspaper” or heard from its “elected officials,” a new poll conducted on behalf of the folks at 8664.org shows that a vast majority of Louisvillians don’t seem to favor hardly any of the tenets of that bloated, unwieldy and budget-killing Ohio River Bridges Project. The poll — conducted by Frederick Polls of Arlington, VA — has a sample size of 500 Jefferson County registered voters, and serves as the latest available opinion data re: Louisville-area residents’ views concerning these matters. Now then:

“By 66% to 27%, more metro Louisville voters say the most important bridge priority is to build a new East-end bridge, not a downtown bridge. In the East-end, preference for an east river crossing jumps to 76-20. Meanwhile, majorities in South and Central parts of the county also prioritize an East-end bridge first and even in West Louisville, more support on an East-end bridge than a downtown bridge.”

And:

Eighty-six percent (86%) of metro Louisville voters say an Eastend bridge is more of a good idea “because it will provide a bypass around Louisville” than say it is a bad idea “because it will encourage sprawl” (8%).

Seventy-two percent (72%) have a positive reaction to a transportation plan that includes building “an east-end bridge to connect I-265 in Kentucky to I-265 in Indiana.” In Eastern county, 79% are positive; 60% in West Louisville.

Our prediction? In less than 48 hours The Courier-Journal will run an editorial saying how this study was funded by communists and that anybody who believes the study is a communist, too, and should be deported to communist-land.

I thought it would be mildly useful to report an online poll I’ve been conducting on Louisville History & Issues since mid-April, and it’s still ongoing if anyone wants to register at the site and vote.

The question is: “With the East End Bridge in place, would you support building a second Downtown Bridge?” Link: http://www.historyandissues.org/louisville/viewtopic.php?t=1344

    Here’s the results so far:

    - No, it’s unnecessary and thus financially wasteful — 62.5%

    - No, but if downtown congestion doesn’t significantly clear up after the East Bridge is operational, I may rethink it — 25.0%

    - Yes, but only if the East End Bridge doesn’t significantly work to alleviate downtown traffic congestion — 12.5%

    - Yes, unreservedly — 0.0%

    - Unsure - 0.0%
