Proving The Gannett Co. has no respect for the dead, the company is removing the old “C-J & T” and “The Louisville Times” signs from The Courier-Journal building at 6th & Broadway. It has been more than 20 years since the afternoon newspaper, The Louisville Times, was published, however, its tombstone isn’t going without a fight.
One of the workers said removing the “C-J & T” sign was easy, but it took all day just to remove one letter from the 50-year-old Louisville Times marker, which was glued and bolted. The workers on the crane yanked and pulled at the “s” to no avail. They gave up their struggle and lowered the crane as we snapped our last photo.
According to the C-J report, the two signs will be replaced with a back-lit “courier-journal.com” sign, which will flash like a florescent green glowing Bat signal underneath the original (and plain) “The Courier-Journal” sign, which will be cleaned up with a new paint job. The new advertisement, however, screams, “Who reads the paper? Go to the website! Go to the website!”
“It’s time to update our signage to reflect our current and future business model,” said C-J President and Publisher Arnold Garson. “The original signage identified this building as the home of two dominant news products. With this change, our building will once again be identified in that way.”
Let’s see how long the dearly departed’s last public mark on the city will last.
