Not like this should really come as a shock, but what can you do? We’re the home of the Biggie-sized meal, eleven different versions of “CSI,” and baseball stopped being interesting decades ago; why should our stomachs shrink when it comes to something actually exciting, like a war, which at least features explosions? From The Baltimore Sun:
A new poll shows a substantial majority of Americans have resigned themselves to the reality of our nation’s perpetual foreign wars … The poll, conducted by Clarus Research Group, showed that 68 percent of us agree with idea that we won’t either win or lose the war in Afghanistan, now eight years long, but will instead just remain there.
Another poll, this one by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, shows these same Americans to be hawkish when it comes to Iran and its nuclear ambitions. The poll showed that 61 percent of the 1,500 respondents agreed with the idea that it is “more important to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, even if it mean taking military action” than to “avoid military conflict.”
Although it could be reflective of our collective indifference and consumerist apathy, perhaps we’re just becoming more realistic about the mechanics of “international relations” and our country’s time-tested approach: Missile strikes.
