Cut list: Despite the optimistic economic forecast nationally, Mayor Jerry Abramson says the first quarter is not looking good and more cuts to the budget are likely. After last year’s slash and burn, we are wondering what might be on this year’s cut list and whether the mayor spoke too soon when he canceled the furlough days?
The money’s on fire: After an eight-year battle with the city over miscalculated overtime, Louisville firefighters and retirees say if their settlement with the city is approved it would cost Metro government up to $45 million. This figure comes from a tentative settlement that union representatives and city leaders reached earlier this month, which if agreed to by the parties must be approved by the Metro Council.
Correction Journal: The Courier-Journal ran a correction following it’s missive against mayoral term limits. On Wednesday, the C-J’s editorial board blamed Metro Council Republicans for introducing the resolution and picking on the mayor. They failed to note that the resolution’s sponsor is Councilman Brent Ackerson, a Democrat.
Street talk: Neighborhood associations and concerned citizens gathered downtown to give representatives of the consultant team and the Downtown Development Corp. their two cents about a preliminary study of a dozen Louisville streets in and near downtown. Meanwhile, an hour’s drive down I-64 East, Lexington residents are having similar discussions and are brainstorming on how to make their streets more livable.
Split-O: In the aftermath of the National Equality March, many LGBT Americans are furious or, at the very least, deeply frustrated with Obama’s record on gay rights.
