It’s official — almost. Kentucky Senate President David Williams is expected to announce his gubernatorial candidacy tomorrow morning with former University of Kentucky basketball star and Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer as his running mate.
In a news release, both have scheduled a press conference to discuss “their futures”, which means the media has to play dumb until they say they’re running. However, a not-so-subtle website bearing both their names under “Governor” and “Lt. Governor” with a basketball shows an active countdown scheduled end at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
If Williams and Farmer do announce their candidacies (what else could they be vying for, head and assistant coach for the UK men’s basketball team?), it will be the second Republican ticket pair in next year’s GOP primary. Currently Louisville businessman Phil Moffett is seeking the GOP nomination with state Rep. Mike Harmon, R-Danville, as his running mate.
Last year, Governor Steve Beshear, a Democrat, announced he would seek re-election with Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson as his running mate. The pair have raised more than $2.6 million for the 2011 election.
