Yesterday we covered how Sen. Damon Thayer’s proposed redistricting maps affected the 6th congressional district and Rep. Ben Chandler.
But what about John Yarmuth and the 3rd district in Jefferson County?
Thayer moves a significant chunk of eastern Jefferson county into the 2nd district, while the 3rd district picks up precincts in the south and southwest. The eastern precincts that are lost are heavily and reliably Republican, while the precincts gained in the south only lean Republican (in total). It’s not inconceivable that such a switch in the 3rd would wind up being a net gain of almost 3,000 votes for Yarmuth (or votes lost for his opponent, whoever that will be). Yarmuth won re-election in 2010 by over 27,000 votes, but this map would give him some extra cushion.
Stumbo and Thayer still have to fight over their very different maps, however, so this might be subject to change.
