As we fully expected, soon-to-be Tea Party darling Thomas Massie, the Republican Lewis County judge executive, has filed to run for Rep. Geoff Davis’ open 4th District congressional seat.
He has the backing of the Tea Party and Rand Paul campaign staffers/volunteers, is running against two GOP “establishment” candidates who will split that vote, and unlike Phil Moffett, he’s got some political skills and charisma.
And speaking of Moffett, Kentuckians in the 4th might get a glimpse of this guy below that didn’t bother lifting a finger against David Williams in last year’s gubernatorial primary.
Rand Paul must have some unspoken pact with Mitch McConnell and David Williams that prohibits him from going after those two, but I doubt he’d have any qualms about going after Gary Moore and Alecia Webb-Edgington, Massie’s “establishment” opponents who Paul owes nothing to.
Even though Lewis County has a small population and the other candidates are from the heavily populated northern Kentucky districts, we’ll go ahead and name Massie the front-runner for this primary race.
And if Massie does win the primary, we’ll have another sight to behold. Mitt Romney running for president as the GOP’s nominee, with a key GOP congressional candidate in Kentucky who openly calls him a “RINO.” Oh, Tea Party drama.
