The Violence Against Women Act– which usually passes unanimously or near-unanimously — was approved to be reauthorized today in the Senate by a 68-31 vote.
Those 31 nay votes? They were all white Republican men.
Two of the 31 were our own Sen. Rand Paul and Sen. Mitch McConnell.
Considering how much libertarian men hate the Violence Against Women Act (and women), I wondered back in 2010 how Rand would vote on this. I guess we know now.
We also probably know how Rand Paul’s volunteer coordinator from Bourbon County feels about this.

And of course, we should tip our hat to our beloved Mitch McConnell, who thinks it’s crazy to suggest that there is a Republican War on Women happening. I bet he’ll even tell you that the four Republican women in his caucus voted against it…

(P.S.- It’s not entirely fair to say that these old white Republican guys voted against this only because of their unhealthy views towards women. It’s also their unhealthy views towards The Gays and Mexicans.)

I find it strange that anyone would question Senator McConnell’s assertion
that the War on Women is a ‘manufactured issue.’ He is absolutely correct, it is
manufactured and it gives me hope that, if nothing else, Republicans are capable of
getting behind something manufactured in this great country.
The “War on Women” is absolutely manufactured when you look the issues facing
Americans today and realize that Republicans in legislatures in states as disparate
as Arizona and Virginia have nothing better to do than to micromanage the personal
health decisions of others all while decrying the ‘nanny state,’ and ‘attacks on
personal freedoms.’ This war has been manufactured to cover up the fact that
Republicans have no policy initiatives to deal with the very real problems facing
our country from health care costs to energy consumption to unemployment.
Unfortunately the War on Women isn’t new, it’s just apparent to more people today
than it has been.
We live in a country where women work harder, are paid less, and shoulder the
lion’s share of the implications of our moral debates than men do. We don’t
pass laws requiring men to endure the strictures of one group’s moral code but
Republicans don’t bat an eye when it comes to doing that to women. We decry the
corrupt theocracy in Iran and Republicans whip up fear of Islamic religious laws
being imposed upon Americans while imposing their beliefs on others in much the
same way.
We are the greatest country on Earth and a truly exceptional, creative people:
we should turn our energies toward solving problems instead of looking for ones
that divide people at the ballot booth. The War on Women IS manufactured. It is
manufactured to distract and divide us because the Republicans under McConnell’s
leadership can offer nothing to inspire and unite us.
I have worked with VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) and it astounds me that this program’s legislation was not passed unanimously. Yes, there is a war on women and yes, the Republicans (including own own sexist Kentucky Senators) are waging it. Anyone with a heart that knows anything at all about this program could not vote against it with a good conscience. But first, you must have a conscience. I think that is what McConnell and Paul are missing.

He voted against the act because he believes the issue should be handled at the state and local level. And I for one support that.
