McConnell leaks internal poll confirming Judd can beat him, and he’s scared to death of her

The re-election campaign of Sen. Mitch McConnell claims he is invincible, and that any poll showing otherwise — like that of Public Policy Polling last week, finding him unpopular and only 4 percent ahead of the likes of Ashley Judd — is partisan garbage that you should pay no heed to.

The funny thing is, McConnell’s campaign just leaked an internal poll to The Washington Post, which is the universal sign of a worried campaign.

Even better, the poll found McConnell beating Ashley Judd by… 4 percent. Why does that number sound familiar?

To top off how completely unafraid McConnell is of Judd and losing, check out these details from the poll:

The poll also tested a number of GOP lines of attack on Judd, including the fact that she has homes in Scotland and Tennessee but not her native Kentucky, her support for Obamacare and abortion rights and her anti-coal comments. All, as one might expect, poll poorly in conservative Kentucky and move voters into McConnell’s camp.

The poll memo did not include numbers for any lines of attack on McCoonnell. It was conducted from Dec. 10 to Dec. 13.

So McConnell’s campaign will have you believe that he isn’t vulnerable and PPP is garbage, yet immediately after the PPP poll was released they went out into the field with a push poll against Judd.

Once again we’re not buying the spin, and this is a clear sign that McConnell’s campaign is not only freaking out, but not clearly grasping the art of public relations.

Also note the fact that the poll was done by Jan van Lohuizen, the discredited master of fake polling who said that Trey Grayson was tied with Rand Paul in 2010 just before Paul won by 23 percent. Yet despite this… Mitch is only beating Ashley Judd by 4 percent, just like PPP said he was.

We’ve got a ball game here, folks. And Mitch needs a headband, because the sweat appears to be dripping into his eyes so much that he can’t see straight.

If Ashley Judd runs as who she is, if she is willing to devote her full time and energy to the campaign, and if she recruits a professional campaign staff, she will beat McConnell.

I would like to see her start with a tour through coal country in the footsteps of Robert Kennedy.

Wouldn’t it be a hoot if hiring Ron Paul’s son in law as campaign manager wasn’t enough to keep Mitch from getting primaried?

I realize a lot of Kentucky Democrats are getting excited about the prospect of a Judd candidacy, but I just don’t see her winning in Kentucky. I suspect the R’s would flood the airwaves early with ads dismissing her as a “Hollywood liberal.” And I think in Kentucky, that strategy would work.
