Mandy Connell– the conservative WHAS radio host known for calling President Obama a “half-breed,” advocating genocide of women and children in Afghanistan, and referring to “raccoon gangs” in “failing schools” — has stepped in her own verbal poo again.
On Thursday, Connell made the batshit comparison of registering gun owners to the Nazi practice of forcing German Jews to wear yellow stars while discussing gun control with Rep. John Yarmuth. Watchdog organization Media Matters picked up WFPL’s coverage of Connell’s statement with a blog post the next day, but not until after Connell was unapologetic on the air that morning. On Friday, Connell criticized WFLP’s Phillip Bailey for covering her remarks (calling him a “pain in her ass”), as she once again made a Nazi comparison and said registration was akin to the government compiling “a list of undesirables.”
On Friday, LEO Weekly spoke with Nina Sundell, the regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, who called Connell’s statement offensive.
“While reasonable people can disagree about gun control policies, comparing firearm policies to the Nazi’s practice of forcing Jewish Germans to yellow stars is offensive,” Sundell says. “Inappropriate comparisons and references to the Nazis and the Holocaust trivialize the suffering experienced by those who perished and causes further pain to Holocaust survivors.”
Sundell also hopes that WHAS realizes the severity of this offense and takes future actions to ensure that such comparisons are never made again.
“ADL would always hope that when something like this happens, people would take a step back and realize the pain that it causes and refrain from using similar painful analogies in the future,” says Sundell.
Kathy Stein, a Jewish state senator from Lexington, has more direct words for Connell (as she’s prone to do).
“It took only a couple of times listening to Ms. Connell when she first hit the Louisville airwaves to quit listening to her show,” says Stein. “But this level of sheer virulent myopia needs to be repeated in order to point out that she earned every bit of contempt people of good sensibility give her. Yarmuth is a saint for even talking with her.”
On Friday, Connell said “I refuse to be painted as some kind of right-wing kook, some kind of nut bar, because I believe that the 2nd Amendment has to be defended.”
WHAS programming director Kelly Carls tells LEO that they do not yet have a comment on the statement of Connell or the ADL’s criticism, but have referred the matter to their community relations department.
The only thing we can be sure of is that President Obama will not force Mandy Connell to wear a dunce cap…
***** UPDATE *****
Kelly Carls contacted LEO and says that Mandy Connell will make a statement on this at the beginning of tomorrow’s (Tuesday) show.
