Kentucky’s farmers are getting a little help from the state with the announcement of $934,798 for nine separate “diversification projects” that will encourage the “development and expansion of new agricultural products.” Instead of growing corn, soybeans or horsies (which are currently 3 of the Commonwealth’s top five agricultural exports) we might witness fields of kiwi, spandex or iPods. How neat! But the goal here is to increase income levels for farmers and the state by allowing them to grow stuff other than what the government tells them to (or not to) grow.

Also included in this state money is $17,559 for the ominous sounding “Deceased Farm Animal Removal Program,” which aims to minimize the amount of pig’s bile that seeps into the local drinking water by providing “coordination of environmentally sound and cost effective disposal of deceased livestock for Kentucky producers.”
