After postponing the initial date, Metro Parks and the Louisville Loop project team have announced the second of three public meetings to gather information and seek input regarding the 100-mile initiative that will ultimately encircle the city.

The meeting will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing, 7410 Moorman Road in southwest Jefferson County. The project team is looking for input from the public on what they’d like to see, and is hostingThe meeting will begin at 6 p.m., with a presentation on the plan at 6:30 p.m. followed by small group discussions led by staff.

The Louisville Loop, a key component of the City of Parks initiative to expand and improve the city’s vast public parks system, and is a paved shared-use path encircling Louisville that will measure more than 100 miles when complete. The plan has been a favorite of elected officials, who say it offers recreational and alternative transportation routes for cyclists, joggers and walkers.

During the meeting, residents and potential loop users will be asked to contribute their ideas, according to officials, adding that gaining public input is a critical step in analyzing the potential locations of the shared-use path.

The preliminary concept plan will be presented to the public as a draft at the final open house sometime in early spring. The Pond Creek Corridor Shared-Use Path and Ecological Restoration Plan study was introduced to the public at an open house in October 2010.

The band of citizens who are trying save the “teepee” pavilion near Hogan’s Fountain in Cherokee Park have kicked-off a fundraising effort to salvage the structure.

For the past several years, the wigwam-shaped shelter has been in serious disrepair with crumbling stonework, decaying roof shingles and graffiti despite being a popular venue.

After learning about a longstanding master plan developed by Metro Parks and the Louisville Olmsted Parks Conservancy to demolish the shelter, residents founded Save the Hogan’s Fountain Pavilion, a group that has been petitioning the community and elected officials to help save what they believe is a historic landmark.

From WFPL:

The group is asking the community to take part in an online Readers Digest contest that includes 40 thousand dollars to pay for community projects.

The group’s co-chair, Tammy Madigan, says Metro Parks is not participating in the fundraising, but is not opposed to the effort.

(SNIP)

Madigan’s group hopes to raise more than $80,000 to fix the roof.

The city has said it would cost $150,000 to replace the roof alone, however, Madigan told LEO that amount is based on one estimate, and members of her group have contacted a local company that is willing to charge $82,000 for a new roof and repainting.
