After a spate of gay teen suicides last fall, alt-weekly guru and Seattle Stranger columnist Dan Savage started the Make it Better Project It Gets Better Project aimed at LGBT youth who are dealing with constant bullying and harassment. The video campaign went viral with a number of celebrities and political leaders jumping on the wagon to cut their own versions, including Congressman John Yarmuth, D-KY, who joined other Louisvillians to cut a video for the campaign.

The issue has faded from the media spotlight, but a few weeks ago the U.S. Department of Education began investigating one of those suicides, which could reignite the debate.

In light of the recent spate of gay teen suicides, Seattle Stranger columnist Dan Savage has released the following video, entitled “It Gets Better,” with the aim of letting LGBT youth know that once they leave the hideous, bully-laden netherworld known as “high school,” life does, in fact, get better.

The video, along with Savage’s column on the subject, has since led to the creation of the Make it Better Project, which “gives youth the tools they need to make their schools better now!” By way of YouTube, the project aims to not only inform teens that they’re not alone, but to give them the tools to make their school a more tolerant one, as well.

And, what do you know: It looks like a couple of Louisvillians have already responded to the call.
